Assessment of alternative land management practices using hydrological simulation and a decision support tool: Arborea agricultural region, Sardinia

چکیده
Quantifying the impact of land use on water supply and quality is a primary focus of environmental management. In this work we apply a semidistributed hydrological model (SWAT) to predict the impact of different land management practices on water and agricultural chemical yield for a study site situated in the Arborea region of central Sardinia, 5 Italy. The physical processes associated with water movement, crop growth, and nutrient cycling are directly modeled by SWAT. The model simulations are used to identify indicators that reflect critical processes related to the integrity and sustainability of the ecosystem. Specifically we focus on stream quality and quantity indicators associated with anthropogenic and natural sources of pollution. A multicriteria decision support 10 system is then used to develop the analysis matrix where water quality and quantity indicators for the rivers, lagoons, and soil are combined with socio-economic variables. The DSS is used to assess four options involving alternative watersheds designated for intensive agriculture and dairy farming and the use or not of treated wastewater for irrigation. 15

A Watershed Management Tool Using SWAT and ArcInfo
While watershed management is gaining wide support, the spatial information on socioeconomic and physical processes needed for evaluating alternative watershed management plans is not readily accessible to local decision makers. With wide adoption of geographic information system (GIS) technology, a user-friendly and interactive decision support system appears to be an efficient tool in watersh...

A Watershed Management Decision Support System (WAMADSS) is used to evaluate the economic and environmental consequences of alternative land use/management practices (LUMPs). WAMADSS consists of three components: (1) a GIS, (2) an economic model, and (3) two environmental simulation models. Specifically, ARC/INFO serves as the engine for integrating the Cost and Return Estimator (CARE) program,...

Hydrological response of a watershed is a comprehensive symbol of environmental conditions and characteristics of the basin. Vegetation is one of the main factors in water resources status, erosion, and sediment of a watershed. Rangelands of Golestan province, Iran due to the geographical location, climate, and destruction of these resources as well as drastic land use changes from forests, and...
متن کاملGIBSI: an integrated modelling system for watershed management – sample applications and current developments
Hydrological and pollutant fate models have long been developed for research purposes. Today, they find an application in integrated watershed management, as decision support systems (DSS). GIBSI is such a DSS designed to assist stakeholders in watershed management. It includes a watershed database coupled to a GIS and accessible through a user-friendly interface, as well as modelling tools tha...
متن کاملA framework for coupling land use and hydrological modelling for management of ecosystem services
It is well known that land-use changes influence the hydrological cycle and that those changes in the hydrological cycle influence land use. The sophisticated spatial dynamic planning tools that have been developed in the last decades to support policy makers in the decision making process do not take into account the mutual feedbacks between land use and hydrology. In this study a framework fo...
